I seen this famous black dog you speak of he got stuck between the duels on my trailer tires. Poor guy took off running from the porch and got all tangled up in my tires. I guess he wont be biting tires any time soon

Not really a "black dog", but more of the theory that your mind plays tricks on you. I've Been startled by reflections or glares from lights. One that really stood out was remembering a story my mom told me when I was younger about an ax murderer who would jump in the backseat of people who run into stores late at night. I ran into the truckstop one night and specifically remember opening my bunk curtains all the way when I went back there. I went inside, came out,.jumped in the truck and hit the road. It dawned on me about an hour later that not only were my curtains now closed, but the Velcro was strapped together completely down the middle. Call me a pansy but I had no intentions of pulling.over to investigate. For the next 3 hours I kept getting the feeling down my spine that something was reaching thru the curtain at me.

OP is probably long gone, but when someone experiences severe sleep deprivation, the brain often begins releasing the neurotransmitters that cause dreams while we are in REM sleep. When "awake" this causes the brain to try to interpret a mixture of the signals it is receiving from the senses along with the signals that the dream neurotransmitters are sending. It is technically a delusional perception and not a hallucination because the "black dog" is a real object (shadow, wind-blown branch) to which our brain attributes false qualities.

I remember pulling guard duty in the woods in the army. Late at night when you're tired you start thinking you see things moving. Like trees. Then you know you're tired.

The human psyche is unique to the person. Sometimes it's a black dog sometimes it's a far more horrible and scary thing. It's what your own self conscious can conjure up to scare the hell out of you to warn you that you are driving too long and putting yourself and others in danger. I've seen it far more times than I care to remember.
