READ this and "Let it go".
The yard dog offers to spot the trailer AND says not to blind side yourself? GIVE it to the yard dog in a nanosecond. You will get PLENTY of opportunities to practice blind side at hideous truck stops at midnight. Don't do it at a customer that doesn't WANT you to do it.TequilaSunrise, bzinger and Big Don Thank this. -
Looks like a lot of logical answers here. You mention that
I guess what I am getting at here, is that there was less than stellar communication between you and the receiver. Perhaps he is an a whole. Perhaps you were over tired and sort of lost your perspective.
In this business, as in life, you are going to run into people who are either just having a bad day, or are flat out jerks. Try not to let their problems create problems for you.
Blind side backing occurs, just like excrement occurs. But when someone tells you something is against their policy, and then offers to give you a hand, (as in letting the goat put it in the door,) just go with it.
So they give you an attitude, big deal. You will be driving away from them in a little bit anyway. But THEY can't drive away from themselves.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Also about liability. Imagine the conversation from customer to your safety department, "He was doing a blind back and we told him to stop, They are not allowed here, but he refused to stop and hit the trailer next to him!"

Never blind side unless there is truly no other option. Sometimes your eyes will fool you and you just need to find the perfect sight-sided setup. If it's so tight that you're really worried about hitting something, go get a spotter. Even if it takes a while.b It's a PITA, but a lot less than an accident.
Blind siding at truck stops is way more common than at shippers. Practice in the middle of the day. Do it often. Blind side sucks, but sometimes you just have no choice. So best to practice. -
One trick you might need for blindside or sight side is drop the trailer during the attempt and re-hook to trailer at a different angle. If you are willing to do this sometimes you can keep it on the sightside, or start on sightside and finish as blindside, or vice versa.
In a pinch when blindside backing keep a little bit of "daylight" between your trailer and obstacle in your forward/right side wide-angle mirror. -
