Naa we arn’t far off here either. I will flash at times when the truck is trying to pass me at a slow speeding, indicating he’s heavy or at the limit of is top end. Usually to make sure he’s not getting angry followers. Yet when someone blows past my door by the time I reach to flash him he’s already 100-200 feet ahead I think there is no need.

but when it’s raining I try to always do it even if they don’t thinking one day maybe they will realize.

Not legend. Many things were communicated between DRIVERS years ago via lights prior to the CB. Safe to pass, safe to come back over, location of beatrs, danger ahead. Lots of guys used to display a set pattern of lights in the window to identify themselves, especially amongst the LTL linehaul guys. Lighted CB antennas were common too to see who was keying up, at least here in the Midwest

I blink my trailer lights when tucking back in after a shut off of the headlights. Those that blind me with their high beams, get a different gesture. I will shut of my headlights for a couple of seconds when it is okay for you to come in. If you are stupid and try to take the nose off of my truck because you were sure you could get around me before that lane closed, gestures and bad mouthing everyone in your family is transpiring. If you don't want your momma bad mouthed, don't be an arse.

I see that all day every day.

I like to give a little room to allow for the potential for stupidity from the passee, like if he looks up from his text messaging and sees a truck going by he might decide to floor it all of a sudden, in addition to the whole “courtesy” aspect.

But then like you said, everybody behind me in the left lane that wants to run 20 mph over the speed limit will fly by on the right as soon as there’s a frog’s hair to spare.

I don't overthink it like y'all. I have LEDs in the low and high beams so I'll just blast everyone until they hit my retinas with their strategic work light.

I think the sarcasm was missed. It’s a legend now if it wasn’t back then. ;-)

The other side of that courtesy is the one that you are try to give space before you merge over and he flashes the brights temporarily stunning you for no good reason especially when it’s raining and I’m kicking up a whirlpool

They are saying f you by doing that. I get it sometimes and I’ve always interpreted it as f u for not flashing me in. I’m not going to flash someone until there is a decent distance unless it’s a climb where the guy needs to get back because he’s got another truck behind him, then I’ll flash them back sooner.

Yes where I'm currently driving in the "wild west" Western Australia, most vehicles on the highway are Road Trains and 98 % would be Quads towing 4 trailers carting Iron ore roughly around 60 metres long or about 190 ft in imperial for those that don't know metrics, so you can understand if a "Road Train" that is traveling at a much higher speed needs to pass another train going at a slower speed some degree of help is required to make it a safe operating procedure. The front truck will often call up the driver in the truck behind asking if they wish to pass and let them know when it will be safe to pass due to it only being one lane each way, obviously if it was a two lane freeway no assistance would be required as a faster approaching vehicle could simply merge right here, or left over there and pass without assistance, once all the 60 metres of truck and trailers have passed we'll give them a holler and say "yeah your clear to come back across". It does not cost anything to be helpful to others is what I find, and keeps things safe on our highways.
