I'm pretty sure the gauge is inop but will give that a shot. Vapor lock crossed my mind, it has ALL the symptoms but I've always heard that you can't vapor lock a diesel because the fuel pressure is too high.
Blown turbo or hung jake?

yes when they get worn they have a tendency to stay stuck in the advanced position.
-
Gotcha, will take a peek. What exactly should I be looking for?

it's been a while since i've seen one of those if i remember the weights have a (finger) that sits in a grove when they spin the spread out and advance the pump timing. some times they will (jump) out of grove keeping timing advanced or retarded depending on which way they are they do break or the springs break or fall off. if i remember didnt you have trouble getting the injector pump off? if you spun the nut thats on the front of the timing cone you might have it adjusted wrong and that could of messed the weights up.

Yes, we did have trouble getting the pump off. The "mechanic" that I had working for me didn't realize the advance unit had to come off the engine, as soon as it came off the fuel pump came out no problem. I wasn't there right when the pump came off but it wouldn't surprise me if he touched that nut. I'll take a look at the fingers when I get back to the truck, thanks!

If it happened you broke push rods because timing was not set up right it is very likely that some valves got bent and not sealing properly. Combustion pressure under load may squeze in that micro gap between a valve and a seat overcome a spring tension and open the valve. I am not saying that they bent really bad but just enough for combustion pressure to leak in and push that valve(s) down. Hope it is not your problem.
