Says he drove to repair shop. Then got roadside to replace turbo?

Says there was an explosion, not a run away. Surely he could tell if the engine tried to turn 5,000 rpm.

Sounds more like turbo boosted thus pushing oil out of charge air cooler and into intake.

How did you drive 20 miles with a blown turbo? Would have had no power and smoked like a freight train. Did the turbo grenade or what exactly happened to it? If the impeller in the turbo broke it likely sent many tiny pieces of shrapnel everywhere. CAC should have been pulled off and washed out. New air filters installed and any and all piping should have been completely dismantled and checked for pieces of turbo.

You may be lucky as hell. ... if you have comprehensive insurance.

Even if the road side guy doesn't own up and take care of it, via his insurance or out of his pocket, your comprehensive "should" pay out because of the failed repair caused the damage.

I’ve blown 3 turbos on 2 Detroit’s, Drove 7 miles, 3 miles, and 5 miles. each time. Twice had Cac’s boiled, last one, only tiny amount of oil present in pipe. Didn’t need boiling. Next time I blow a Turbo, I’ll take the Cac / intake pipe off, just in case, and drive to a safe place.

Last one I blew let go under full boost pressure. Coasted about 1/2 mile into friends driveway lucky enough. Found shrapnel everywhere including filters and jammed in elbows and fittings

I learned this the hard way. Cost me 2 turbos. I cleaned everything on the intake side but I didn’t touch the CAC. And this was on the roadside. Was trying to save a tow truck haul. Well it cost me more, BUT I didn’t lose the engine.
Long story short, I blew the replacement turbo 1/4 mile after I install it. When got back to the shop, they sent the CAC to be cleaned. That shop said, many debris came out from it.
This happened probably about 8 years ago or so. I started a thread on it.

Possibly... #### probably got logged into the charged air and caused a big pressure issue. Not to mention stuff hitting your motor. There’s no way you just brake #### like that

Even if it was oil that caused it I’m sure you would have noticed the oil loss at the rate of what the liter per cylinder
