Ok time for my two cents. treat a BT like you have a load. If you don't have a prepass with a green light or a sign that says to pass on by. Go in. Better to stop at a closed scale then to hand over your pay check to the state because you thought you didn't need to stop.

Agreed with all previous posts! It kinda blows chunks that you have to slow your roll and go thru the scale but it is what it is - kinda the same with flatbeds - if your empty why should you have to roll thru the scale right....but you do.

I think the bottom line here is NOT to take Chances - do the right thing & keep yourself & your record clean!

Weigh stations not only weigh, they check for registration/fuel permits/mechanical issues/driver qualifications etc.

I don't think it is worth it to try to get it home without tags. I am sure you can get a temp tag from someplace...

Well only you can decide if the risk is worth the reward. Good luck!

Sorry for the thread hijack. What's prepass? I can assume what it might be. Watkins Shepard uses these apparently and I'll be working for them soon

A prepass is a device on your windshield that pays the toll booths. It has 2 LED's on the back of the device visible to the driver, one red one green. Most scale houses have some form of radar that emits a signal that will talk to this for truckers. As you approach the scale house you will get a green to keep on going or scale house is closed. Or you get a red and you enter the scale house area. 2nd gear past the shack, kind of a rolling stop. They also have a traffic light on the scale house that if it turns red they want you to park it. If they want you to park it, you do so beyond the scale house and take your shipping info to the house.

LOL they stopped me once and I had to tell them how I couldnt be overweight with the load of 5000 pounds of confectioners sugar.

At most scales, at least the ones I am familiar with, if the signal turns red while you are on the scale, you better stop when the light says to, like when your steers, drives or tandems are on the platform. If you pull off the scale without their authority you might end up with a pissed off DOT person.
