Go read over some of Supersnackbars posts in his Shaffer thread (Crete's sister company). He talks about his opti-idle messing up. One thing I learned from his thread (since I've never had an opti-idle before, only APU's) is that the company can change what the idle temperature ranges are, at will, and remotely, without ever bringing it into a shop. Lol. Just lol to that. That leaves it open for such large abuse from upper management to change the idle temp ranges at will like that.
I started trucking in 2019. Even in 2019 warehouses were bad about not letting drivers wait inside but ever since 2020, I have found that very few of them want you waiting inside during live loads. And most of them have no idling policies. During the summer time and the winter time, that's terribly hard on a driver, especially when the loading process takes more than an hour.
Also, at what basis is this opti-idle measuring the temps? I'm assuming it's probably taking temperatures outside of the truck. Well, what the office folks don't understand is that when you run your truck on a long day and drive 500 - 600 miles, that truck is going to be HOT when you park. Especially during the summertime! So imagine driving 10 hours one day, then you shut down around 8:00pm in the South during July. The temperature might be 72 degrees outside so the opti-idle won't cut on. But the inside of your truck is probably more like 90 degrees for the first hour or two that it's shut down!
Supposedly there are ways that you can rig the temperature gauge on the opti-idle to make it idle when you want to. But I'm sorry, no. We as truck drivers deal with enough BS as it is. We are all grown men and women out here. I'm not going to waste my time rigging that stupid opti-idle to make it idle when I want to. This is 2021, truck drivers do not and should not put up with that nonesense in the current year.
It's simply unnaceptable for me personally to drive a truck OTR and not have an APU. I won't do it and I don't care how much more CPM the company will pay. No APU = No work from me.

I have been checking other companies that have APUs... Crete pays well and offers the routes and accounts that I want but all the inconveniences caused by this opti-idle and the "safety system" that makes noises, flashes lights on the dash and applies brakes by itself when driving, all that makes me think that I would not be able to endure that for too long...dwells40 and BeHereNow97 Thank this. -
It doesn't have opti-idle, it has espar heater and an Idle-free a/c unit which will auto start truck if batteries get low. Has separate bank of batteries for all this hoopla.
Having to close coffin curtains to get full benefit of espar and idle for microwave or air fryer, but all in all this truck is nicely appointed.
The fancy fuel saving, driver assist, collision control is annoying, and pulling power is disappointing, but the company is making the payments and buying the fuel so it is their call.
I will forever miss good old go-fast trucks that could roll top speed and eat 44k loads for breakfast. (Nostalgic sigh)BeHereNow97, austinmike, bzinger and 9 others Thank this. -
That thing looks like it's brand new. The last one I saw was a couple years ago at the T/A shop in Franklin, KY, it looked like it had been thru a war.
