Just an update for whoever is interested. Best Western purchased Boomtown and has put $$$MILLIONS$$$ in upgrades to the hotel, casino, bar, buffet, fun center, and has opened a high end award winning steak house. Great right. Well for those of us that know Boomtown used to have a billboard on I80 that advertised a room $29/night sun.- thurs. truckers only. That rate is gone. I stayed wed. evening and the cheapest room is $85/night + taxes/fees $110 total. So its great that they remodeled, the place is beautiful, but they have to charge accordingly now. I did tell the hotel manager that I do understand not being able to give the $29/night rate anymore but truckers wont pay $110/night just for a 10 hr. break, but I think you will get quite a few back if you could get it down to $75/night all in.

The Boomtown of old. Would stop, adjust the brakes, check the lights and get ready for the Truckee scales. Then go in and have the all you could eat crab legs buffet.

In the old,old days,Boomtown was the best trucktop going. Once a year in the summer, they had a big steak cookout outside for the truckers, free food and beer. They had to discontinue that as some drivers took advantage, couldn't handle the alcohol. Companies called and complained about their drivers getting pickled. And yes, they used to keep guaranteed rooms very cheap, for truck drivers, esp. when Donner was closed.
When I first started stopping there in the early 70's,the normal truckers buffet was $1.99. Then later, buffet with all the Prime Rib you could eat was $2.99. And when you paid the bill, they gave you a coupon book with a 2.00 in free nickels, and other 2 for 1 gimmicks, free Keno, other stuff.
They had fuel captains, that took care of your truck when you pulled in for fuel, they fueled you, cleaned your windows and mirrors, checked your oil and tires. Weight/exercise room, nice showers, all kinds of goodies for truckers. Really felt appreciated.
Then I guess they realized there was more money in California gamblers/tourists than truckers. Things changed........But it was fun back in the day.TIMPTE 527, mustang190, 7-UP and 6 others Thank this.
