boot camp?

one of the requirements for con-way TL is: Ability to successfully complete the Con-way Truckload Student "Boot Camp" Program



could some of you tell me about that?

also, i've heard that to drive at con-way you have to work on the dock a certain amount of time. is this true?

the only thing i was concerned about is the physical requirements, as i'm 58 and a bit overweight. ok, more than a bit. i'm 6'2" and 255. i read on one site that they (another company) require you to do the squat test (10 up and down) during the physical. ok, call me a wimp if you want to, but i'd never pass that. the other stuff (lifting, pushing, climbing) wouldn't be a problem, but squating is my acheles heel.

i see that TL and LTL are totally separate at con-way. but what i don't understand about LTL is the hourly pay and handling freight. i thought LOCAL drivers delivered and picked up, TERMINAL WORKERS loaded and unloaded at the terminal, and LTL DRIVERS drove terminal to terminal. in fact, i thought that was what was so desirable about LTL. at 58 i don't want to do much freight touching.

another question, this time about TL. would this be mostly from shipper to receiver? or terminal to terminal? or a mixture of both? also, do i have to start on the dock to get a job with con-way TL?

background, driving record, passport and hazmat are no problem. and since i've worked in the airline industry i've already been locked in a closet (airplane) with the village people. i didn't come out a macho man, but i did learn to deal with people different from me.

ahh, i see, so you start on the dock on LTL only. line-haul is what everybody likes about LTL, right? i'd love line-haul but i don't want to work the dock.

what is working TL like? could i do that thing i've asked in other threads about -- working 2 or 3 weeks out and then being off for a few days? or is it really structured?

i see that they take students from certain schools. my school hasn't mentioned con-way. is there a list of schools? i'm at davidson country community college, nc. i see .30 a mile for 3-6 months experience, up to .36 after a year. that doesn't sound like much money to start -- but i guess the raises come fast enough.

how would working at TL be different or better than working for another company that only does TL? would con-way TL ever go to a con-way terminal, or would it always be shipper to consignee?

oh, by the way, i have a passport. getting into canada isn't an issue. and i don't have any of those other things (dui/child support/drug conviction).
