Hi people out there in internet land. Im Jay, 31 male brooklyn ny. I just got my class a permit. No endorsements yet. I want to turn this into my career but am having a hard time finding a company near my area that is willing to pay for my license as I am married have 3 kids and limited funds. I have been looking for places that give grants also having a hard time locating those.

I have read stories on nightmares getting licenses through companies ie. if you screw up or leave or whatever you lose your license etc. Not looking for that. Im looking to obtain a grant, or have a decent company give me a grant, and find a company willing to take on a green like me. I love driving and have always been fascinated with big rigs. And also would love some advice on what are the best forms of driving jobs what pays the most long term etc. Im not sure if Im regurgitating someone elses thread but I'm new.

    Thanks in advance.

First of all, Welcome to the Forum!!!

You can always look and see if you can qualify for a pale grant. If that doesn't work, then you can start calling some of the big company schools and see what there requirements are. Being that your a newbie, you have a lot of research to do and it will take you a while to find the right fit for you.

    Hope this helps.

Some states have retraining grants available. You may want to check with your local state employment office to see what might be available in your area. Also, check with your local community college or vocational school and see if they offer CDL training. If so, they could have financing or student loans or grants available that could defer or pay for some or all of your training.

There are companies who do offer training. Some require that you already have your CDL. Others may train if you have a learners permit. Some of the training carriers are Swift, Roehl, Millis, CRST, US Xpress, Covenant. Some of the major carriers have gotten away from training.

There are some of the trucking forums that have company listings with their requirements. I don't know if this site has one. Your state employment office may also have a list of carriers who train in your area. If you do go with one of the training carriers you will usually be required to sign an employment agreement which will obligate your to repay them for your training if you leave during the first year. Good luck.

If you get a grant start researching what kind of driving positions appeal to you the most, and start building a career map. You said you have 3 kids so I take it you will eventually like to get a local position. You can do this in one year and still make good money. If hauling gas is something you are interested in then I suggest you find a tanker company that will hire you with no experiance. If Less than truck load (LTL) locally is something you are interested in I suggest that you just go general frieght. Just be perpared for a really tough year and don't quit your for any cost. You need to make sure your spouse is on board with this. If you get that 1 year accident and ticket free in, it will open alot of doors for you.

Out of all the Companies GMAN listed millis is the most appealing to me. They seem to get you home on a regular basis and seem to have a pretty decent training program. I think they only hire NEWBIES from there school. give them a call and find out. I am not saying they are good or bad, they just appeal to me.

if your unemployed try WIA to pay for your school
If you need a company to pay Try Millis Transfer
If you can pay for your own school one way or another, Try Watkins Shepard Trucking

Worst Case Call Swift, I think they hire from up there

What ever you do stay away from CR England!

Good Luck, and welcome to the Forum!
