I had my ecm tuned 2 years ago by rebel 127 and my engine runs fantastic. He mentioned that it would run even better if I put on a Borg Warner 171702 turbo. Its a 12.7 Detroit . Have any of you Detroit owners put this turbo on? What were the results?
Thanks very much.

I wouldn't recommend the 171702 without a tune, but with a tune it's pretty good. It is larger than the stock turbo. Larger means more lag. You want to cruise at 1500+ and when it's hot out it really wont start spooling until around 1350. It will keep your EGTs down and is capable of more max HP.
Downsides - more lag, less jake performance.areelius Thanks this. -
I have a great tune at approx 500 wheel horsepower. It runs great but Rebel 127 said it was choked down with a "dinosaur turbo" He thought it needed opening up. On Ebay a 17702 is about $650 new. It seems too cheap to me. Maybe it's a Chinese knockoff.
I have the stock turbo that came on the Detroit 470 horse engine. I could buy the Borg Warner and give it a try. What turbo would you put on this set up? I pull dry van and my gross weight varies from light to heavy. Western states only. I may have to put a DPF on this soon, so that must be factored in also. It won't go over 28 lbs of boost the way it is. -
I have a 171702. And a rebel tune. Down low it is a bit laggy, but she does fine 1450 and up. Get your turbo from a reputable source. Spending less money on the upfront only to have to buy another and clean out the CAC after it pops isn't a good way to go.

Mostly it's used to achieve higher power and better fuel mileage. -

Ruthless Do you achieve that much boost on a regular basis? My 12.7 has a tune, a BW 171702 turbo, and a shimmed fuel pump. I would get nervous when the gauge went past 35 and would keep going if I kept my foot into it. The gauge only goes to 35 lbs. but the needle would start a second trip around.
