Just curious about anyone with knowledge or experience with a 98 Volvo and with a 12.7 Detroit motor has to say, pros and cons. Just purchased one with 1.3 million miles, inframe done 300k ago. New virgin tires all around decent shape for 10k. Professional opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Bought a 98......

Detroit 12.7 is an excellent motor. Did you get paperwork on the overhaul? The reason i ask os there are many things that may have or may not have been done. Such as injectors turbo head having the block cut ect.... you also have the transmission and rears to consider. Defending on the condition of the truck you may have gotten an ok deal.

Congratulations that is a great package.

Hi Center Lane, Welcome aboard. 10 grand is peanuts for a truck today. Not sure what you plan to do with it, be a great truck to haul RR cans around local. I'd be a little nervous running a truck with that many miles OTR, but I'm sure people do it. Reason I say that, is it could nickel and dime you, cooling, electrics, suspension, rest of the motor, but you've got nothing in it, relatively speaking, so sounds ok. Good luck.

Thanks to you all for your feedback. Bad-luck..... I was told what all was done, just can't remember. I'm buying from a friend of a friend. He's pretty up front and honest. I'll ask more..... never sure what all was included in an inframe. "Semi" retired, THANKS.... glad to be onboard, and I appreciate your input. You are on the money! I'm gonna haul RR cans and pretty local, which is great for me. I do not wish to be on the road that much anymore. I kinda felt the same way about the investment and return. As long as it stays healthy for 1 or 2 years I'll be happy. At that time I will have other options to choose from.
"semi" retired Thanks this. -
Wow, that was kind of a shot in the dark. I pulled RR trailers for almost 5 years out of Chicago. I had a cheaper truck, kind of like you, and when a problem did come up, I was usually an hour from home and not stuck in Phoenix (or where ever) and at the mercy of some rip off truck repair. I knew guys that had newer trucks with a big payment and didn't last 6 months. There's a forum category here for intermodal if you have any questions, people here are glad to help. Intermodal has changed a lot since I did it, but if I can help, let me know. Good luck.
