BLUF: We are signing with a company to haul Department Of Defense (DOD) Arms, Ammunition & Explosives (AA&E)
The rest of the story:
there are approximately 18 companies authorized to haul DOD AA&E. Im not aware of the specifics for a company to gain that authorization but I would imagine it is extensive. Some examples of companies that have an DOD AA&E division are Landstar, Bennett, Bagget, Tri-state, ATS and others.
In order to haul this freight you need have a team driver. Someone must stand watch from the cab of the truck at all times. You must also have special equipment installed on your truck. One big requirement is that you must have a secret security clearance. Why the security clearance? OPSEC. Its not that the explosives are some new secret weapon. Its the fact that they are being moved at all as well as when and where they are being moved. This can give away troop movements and other critical information. Not to mention putting the load at risk…
Needless to say my days of posting pictures of our flatbed load to the flatbed forum are coming to an end.
Some companies do have company drivers haul DOD AA&E but most have owner operators lease on to run under their Authority. We have met couples that run this freight and they report high earnings even last year and this year. One example is a couple that ran 105,000 miles last year and grossed over $600k. This is a specialized area of trucking and we wouldn’t just buy our own truck in this economy to haul general freight.
we are still talking to a few companies and should make a decision about who to work with in the next few weeks.
