I like galaxy radios.a driver needed some money so he sold me his 99,external speaker, brand new clear coax, road king mic,and a wilson 2000 or 5000 antenna(junk to me as i use the francis 5' pre tuned which gets a good ground on a piece of wood) all for a $100.
the 99 had a slight noise in it from my truck as i idled and the modulation was off it seemed but i still jumped on the deal.
Anyway.took it to the shop at the TA in cartersville,ga.,exit 296/I75 and for $69.00,walt( i think),wearing overalls, spent a good hour going over the solders(had a few cold ones),took some junk wattage increaser that actually detracted from the modulation swing off,re-tuned,and cleaned each control.it now swings 40 watts as this is the older 99 that won't do the 200 but i didn't pay for a newer radio either and i knew it was an older 99.
SO.i am very satisfied w/the work they do at this radio shop and suggest that if you are in that TA and need radio work done, take it on in.he had plenty of used ones in there inclusive of a 99 for $250 that was identical to mine that i now have $169 in.
you can find good deals and great technicians and after using the birdman, jeff on monteagle for decades now,i have a closer radio guy that i trust.i'll still use jeff if necessary but getting over there has been a problem and i am up and down I75 often on a particular haul i am asked to run.
they also have trucker hours-10:00 a.m. until 22:00 i think
5 stars out of 5
bought a used galaxy 99 on a whim knowing it needed work

For $100 you made out like a Bandit. You might find the Wilson antenna will possibly outperform the Francis. Especially if the Francis is a fiberglass whip.
x#1 Thanks this. -
Grats on a great deal. I ran a 99 for years. A buddy if mine wanted it sold it to him and got a Styker. Like my Stryker but do miss the Galaxy sometimes. It was a great radio and looked awesome too.

Oh yeah I ran a Monkey Made on mine. It was a great antenna as well.

Wilson beats all IMO.

I also like Galaxy Radios. I have the DX 949 that I purchased from Bells. He done the peak & tune, plus added the RFX 75. I use dual Wilson 2000,s and a Astatic 636L mic. I wasn't sure how it was really sounding until the other day. Most of our other drivers use either a stock Cobra 29 or Connex. One of our driver's asked me what I was running, because it always sounded so clear.
I do have one issue, and that's hearing. The Wilson's are on the short, 5" shafts, and I don't hear as far as I should. I loose the other driver's within about 4 miles. My SWRs are good, it's just that the coil part of the antenna is just a little above my cab, while the tip of the whips are the same height as my stacks.
Anyway I'm very happy with my Galaxy.. -
oh yeah.i have multiple road kings as collected over the years yet use nothing but astatics.bought a new one last month @the TA in commerce,ga. it has the chrome face/long stainless looking cord and was only $49.99.they just have the absolute best modulation imho.heck, you can see it in the swing-

Keep in mind it's not always you, sometimes if the other driver runs a crappy antenna, you'll have trouble hearing him.x#1 Thanks this.

Either one of those Wilsons will out perform the Francis,no question about that.

Did Screwdriver at Bells do the receive mod? It does make the radio have less noise and weak signals seem harder to hear with the Schottky diodes.
It took me some time to get used to it.
The antenna coils are most likely not the problem.
I have 3 different Wilsons and they all sound the same, both short and long shaft.
I put a Monkey made on and the receive changed very little.
Heavy antenna though so going back to my Wilson 5000 to take all that stress off my mirror.
The Astatic mic does sound better than the RK56 on a Galaxy for some reason.
