rental cars can be beaten to hell, one of my cars that my wife drives was an enterprise rental and I got it at a good deal with 12k miles on it, had a year of xm radio, they gave a 100k warranty etc.

I'm not saying Ryder trucks don't ever break down. ALL these "smog trucks" are apt to leave you on the side o' the road at any moment !! We are 7 years now into the EGR/DPF/DEF b&&**&&##!!t so THAT IS ALL THEY HAVE NOW !! NONE OF THESE TRUCKS ARE RELIABLE NO MATTER THE BRAND NAME OR DRIVELINE COMBINATION ! As I said, you cannot recirculate that much smutt back through ANY engine and not expect major problems. So the problem lies with the truck, not necessarily the company leasing/renting the truck. I see 'em up and down the interstate every day and most of 'em are '07 & newer that are on the shoulder, all brands, all engines. And ALL these large fleets, no matter their name, rental/lease or company, PUSH THE "NORMAL" envelope on any sensible service time/mileage. In other words "that load has gotta go, we'll get your oil change when you get back from that Phoenix turn" and MAYBE 4-6,000 miles LATER it happens. Swift got into a conflict with Volvo over their shoddy maintenance practices running 30k miles PLUS between services and no mid service grease job. They were on that "guaranteed trade in $$amount" per unit to reorder before 500k on each unit and after Volvo had to put 8-10k worth of kingpins, tie rod ends, U joints and umpteen other things from running the trucks in the ground, Volvo put a stop to it. I know this from somebody that worked there. Marten runs 35-40k between services using synthetic blend oil. WAAAAAAYYY TOO LONG !! No mid service grease job there either, can you imagine how dry the kingpins and U joints are by then ? So none of the leasing companies are doing anything different than the big fleets do. And if you're the next guy in line to get the unit, all that "extended service interval" stuff unfortunately falls on you ! Now if these fleets speced their trucks with any of the good bypass oil filters that are out there, and did 2 midservice grease jobs, 40k mi between changes ain't out in left field maybe even 50k. But they're running these service interval with a stock setup. The last group of Columbia's with C-15's in 'em Marten got rid of were closing CLOSELY on the 900k mark and were still running fairly well, I even looked at a couple myself, but these fleet "extended" service intervals are just waaaaaayy too long !! Much less all the other "smog stuff" choking up. I hope I live long enough to see all this stupid s&&&!!**t taken off a truck. CA is already "reaping what they've sown" with their latest round of "choke your truck to come here" ! Their truck capacity is falling more every week, that's ok, let 'em put that reefer on a piggyback train with nobody watching it for 3-4 days. They can put it on a dump lift and "pour out the green stuff" out the back when it gets there. Oh well, they made that bed of razor blades, now they can bleed ta death laying on it !!

it's about extended maintainance.
cars these days can go 100k miles on spark plugs. 7500 miles on oil changes. they dno't get greased untill that first part gets replaced and comes with a grease fitting. my new chevy had no grease fittings. -
I have no problem with you being against modern trucks but pls use correct facts and not some rumours and hearsay.
Have a nice day. -
I used to drive an LTL 9000 sleeper truck ,hauling chickens from maine to jersey.my company leased it from ryder, we never missed scheduled maintanence appts. ryder took good care of this truck and so did I. I would have bought it from them in a heartbeat. So don't bad mouth them cause you had %$#@ luck. not All ryder shops are created equal.

To the op..... You couldn't have bought the worst truck ever. Because I did !! And it was brand new.......lol

Bought a Penske lease truck in 2007. It is a 2001 F/Liner. It is a good truck, no major problems yet. I would buy again, but you have to shop closely, some are better than others.

I bought a brand new glider one year ago and have had it in a shop 24 days in one year most of that for the same problem which they couldn't figure out. So your not alone. I think mine is about 95% fixed now. I know it's tough when it comes out of your own pocket instead of under the warranty. My friend bought a Ryder truck and has been driving it for over 4 years and has over 1,ooo,ooo miles so you really can't say all Ryder trucks are junk.

I was told by a friend that is a parts salesman that if I were ever going to buy a used truck he felt Penske would be a better choice than Ryder, he felt Penske took much better care of their trucks.
