I bought a 53 Wabash from a towing company. It was a standard lien sale. The trailer was abandoned, so the towing company acquired it and legally sold it to me. Then I went to DMV to register it in my name. DMV said it was reported stolen and refused to register it. They said to call the police crime unit to find out more. I did that and they haven't finished investigating yet.
I am in possession of the trailer and have a legal lien sale title from the towing company.
Who could have a legal claim to my trailer??
What is a likely scenario when this happens?
The police said that its possible that I don't actually own the trailer.
Anybody ever heard of something like this?
Bought Trailer- then its reported as stolen.

Sounds like you need a lawyer
misterG, WildTiger1990, hot shot jefe and 5 others Thank this. -
My guess it has a bank lien and they will want it back. Then you will have to deal with the fine folks that sold you the trailer. Best of luck

Hopefully the police will clear the title for me. Maybe it is a fraudulent claim.
-
have you talked to the people that sold it to you?
-
Nobody has mentioned a bank as a possibility. The lien process is designed to allow any potential owners to come forward before the item can be lien sold. I can only hope my claim is valid. I do have possession and legal paperwork. A bank would be easier to settle with than another trucker I think. They would be motivated to be rid of it. Thanks for the input.

I haven't approached the towing company that sold it to me yet. I already know what they will say. I am waiting for the police to finish investigating. I will probably have to sue them for damages. It might not be worth that trouble.

well i hope it works out for you, and you wont need to go to court.

You will need to act fast, read the papers seller gave you at time of sale, call your state to find out what seller should have had before they sold it to you, keep trailer off your property till you have money back or clear title app. to start trying to change it over?
