If you are in California and the towing company did a proper lien sale, you are the owner. If the towing company did not do a proper lien sale, they owe you the money you spent.
The original owner is given anple opportunity to challenge a lien sale so if they did not do so, they forfeit their right to the property.
Now where it might get tricky (for the towing company) is if the trailer was worth around $4,000. Below $4,000 and the lien sale process is a bit easier. Above $4,000 and the original owner gets more notice to challenge the proceedings.
Bought Trailer- then its reported as stolen.
