Come on guys. Accidents like this happen daily that are not recorded on TV. At one time we were the new guy and made similar mistakes to this or mistakes in general.

Really?? This ain't no "new guy." I can expect it from a 3-month rookie. But this isn't the only one it "happened" to on this show. The other "new guy" is a 30-year veteran. This guy has road experience. Hooking a trailer is pretty basic.

    This discussion is pathetic.

I do agree , dropping and hooking is basic job skill in trucking

GOAL ( get out and look ) and make sure it's hooked
    And not high hooked ...

If your fifth wheel don't pick that trailer up at least 1/2 inch to 2 inches u stand a chance at a high hook
Get out look , and see prevents allot

    Just my 2 cents

I would think that the 3 month old rook would be more worried about checking everything in depth. I am not a trucker but i do know how vets in my business can easily over look the simple things. Just my thoguhts

When I am responsible for something as basic as making sure my nearly 60,000-pound trailer stays attached to my truck, and knowing the consequences of losing said 60,000-pound trailer, you bloody well better bet your life I'm going to get under that trailer and look to make sure my 5th wheel is properly latched.

Because I'm not willing to bet your life on it.

Isn't it SOP to tug on the trailer after hooking up? If you get a good tug on it isn't that proof it's locked in the fifth wheel? What are you looking for under the trailer? Do the jaws not lock completely sometimes and if not what do you do to fix it?
