Box truck after getting CDL?

So recently I decided after about 2 years of considering it to go ahead and get my CDL. I wanted to get into flatbed. I went to CDL school, got my CDL, all went well there however my wife had some health issues pop up while I was in school.

now I suddenly need to stay local for 6-9 months while she recovers, which is not a huge obstacle, so I decided to look for local work.

All I could find however was driving a box truck daily that I don’t need a CDL for.

My question is, will doing this in the mean time hurt me getting into the field I want later? I know a lot of companies want drivers who went straight otr after school and got some experience that way.

Second, if this won’t hurt that will it count as any sort of experience towards getting me a better job down the line since I’m still driving and delivering?

Thanks in advance, any input appreciated!

Keep your driving record clean and you won't have any problems at all later getting a local or OTR CDL-A job.
Where is your location; state and nearest city/town?

What type flatbed job do you want later?

ANY commercial driving experience is better than nothing, even if it's just a box truck. Most employers would understand the need to stay local during certain times in life, and to not be forced to live inside a fiberglass box for weeks or even months at a time.

One of my first jobs out of CDL school was driving a box truck for a nursery for minimum wage, just so I could refine my Eaton shifting skills to an acceptable level. No employer ever questioned that.

    Norkin and Chinatown Thank this.

I’m in Nashville, Tn and as far as my dream job later I’d love to do some type of regional flat bed where I can have a decent balance of home time.

I think just standard flat bed or oversized I’d enjoy either. I’m a very physical person so I’d enjoy the extra work and if it pays more for it all the better. I love fitness and working up a good sweat lol.

Thanks Fuller, that makes me feel a lot better! I’m ready for the road but I definitely want to take care of my wife first and make sure she’s comfortable on her own when it’s time for me to go.

You live in Nashville! You haven’t looked very hard. There are tons of day cab jobs around there. Every LTL company has a facility there. All the food distributors, like Sysco, US Foods, McLane, and others have facilities there. The OTR companies, like Big G, Venture Express, Charger, Averitt, JB Hunt, USX, Black Horse, and many others have facilities there. You have to get out and drive around on the roadways and in the industrial parks, writing down the names on the cab doors. Again, you’re not looking very hard.
