I have a 2016 triaxel trailer it has 6 air cans on it no maxi spring brakes.
When I hook up I do it like I was taught years ago.
Back up to it.
Hook up the air lines.
Air it up.
Pull the trolley brake down.
Back under it.
Brake chambers..

Read the first couple paragraphs. Not all trailers are still required to have spring brakes.
AModelCat and stillwurkin Thank this. -
I just looked up the law. There are a TON of exempt trailers.
49 CFR § 571.121 - Standard No. 121; Air brake systems.stillwurkin and SmallPackage Thank this. -
Using a impact
-
Please explain why that's bad.Hulld Thanks this.
-
If you use a ratchet you can feel the spring bottom out and stop.
With a impact you have a plausibility of going past bottom out and collapse the chamber.. -
You don’t have to completely bottom them out to release enough tension to remove them and change A pancake.spyder7723 Thanks this.

Not the proper way to do it but ok..
-
I have done I don’t know how many of them that way with out issue.
I just don’t feel I need to compress the spring beyond what is needed to accomplish the job safely and effectively.
I never completely compress strut springs in an automotive application till they bottom either.
Just enough to relieve pressure to accomplish the job.spyder7723 Thanks this. -
Ok, so let me get this straight. Using a 3/8ths drive electric impact ti cafe the brakes to pull as truck 500 feet in to the shop is not proper cause somewhere, at some point in time, some idiot collapsed a can because he wasnt smart enough to realise you can let off the trigger and dont have top hold it down until the socket stops turning. But using vice grips to pinch off an air line and proceeding to drive on the interstate is perfectly kosher.
That pretty much sums up the logic in every thread on ttr.
