My time into the northeast started in the late 80's I was driving a POS 83 freighshaker cabover with the twin screw and like a 288 cummins big cam with either a 45 foot reefer or a big 48 footer.
Remember, I tell stories prefaced with the year they happened in. I would kick that old freight shaker to 90 which was it's max at the time. And there was not that much room to get it there because two of the lanes required a slow to 55 to keep from flopping over, especially the last tunnel before northbound connecticut line tollbooth.
Again, ALOT has happened since my time up there. Not always better. Example Tappan Zee was 7.50 toll to the truck while GW was 15.00 we would get on 287 and fly across the zee and then fight the westchester and deegan I think it was, if you were smart you did not take that one south direct. Verrazano's Tolls were closed for a time upperdeck, punch through at 80 with signs saying do not stop. So aiming a big truck through them as far as I know no one dared to step out to take a toll on my ###.
Again, trying to tell me what I did or did not do in that ####### area is like trying to tell me I never lived or did a #### thing at all. Forget it. I know my history. Take it for what it's worth.
2001 story refers to one of the most serious brake check attempts on my rig that year. In the past if you knocked someone oh well. No one stopped either.,
Brake Check Accident.

@x1Heavy I'm not trying to tell you what you did or didn't do in the 80s and early 90s. That was a different era with a different culture. In fully aware of how nyc was in those days. I'm just saying that using the 80s as a defense for diving 15 over the limit on the 2000s is illogical.
That behavior being so widespread is why the speed limiter mandate is about to get forced upon us.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Sure. I understand your position.
1995 was the year of the limiters in the early forms, tripmaster and so on. I had to change with the times then. 120 plus was no longer possible. And the most and first impact was a dispatch center used to sending people overnights 1000 miles suddenly had hundreds of late loads once the limiters kicked in with firing to follow. I was one of them.
I took my medicine just so.
As far as 2001 is concerned, I took that century to the max through there anyway we were hoofing it to get the GW put away, that is no excuse. However it is what it is. There are certain.. places around the USA where if there is no law there is no law. The VW Rabbit in my case was a aggressor and for HIM to pass ME at close to what must be 80 or more flat out for his POS car is pretty aggressive. Most people in the area got out of the way espeically with the herd thundering behind me. You had to be there.
I can imagine a time in the future where everyone is at 55 or 60 and those who speeded were zapped and disabled or instantly fined stacks of dollars. That time is coming, Cameras infest I495 and red lights are everywhere now. You almost cannot do anything with a truck or car without getting caught.
With that said, there are going to be spots around the USA in which speed is your friend (And double edge sword) the culture will continue to change and harden against speed.
The Industry will change and people like me will be history. And is already in my case is History. So that is that I guess for me.
I used to work an auction house here in Arkansas, If I was not dealing with trucks, newbie truckers who do not possess knowledge of auto, older manuals and what to do with them etc I would very professional with them and did not tolerate ######## or stunts from them. They were absolutely a good crew. Rarely we sent home people. Hardly none from the CDL side of the House.
Now. Prior to the time the House implemented a timer on the time you pick up a fun car and get it to the gate house in Little Rock we would go wide open on those things. 150-170 plus was the best we could do in certain times and spots of the day and some of those cars it was not all wound out. It was a amazing time. But like all good things. That got stopped too. Oh well. If I wanted to carry on I would fly to Las Vegas and rent a top end car on the track at the facility there and eat out my need for the go. That would be the best way to do it.FerrissWheel and TheDude1969 Thank this. -
