I've been told twice now by 2 separate drivers some are mandatory . Like running a scale house if you don't. That's why I asked here. Half what people say out there is BS. But the last guy did mention I-5 siskyou mountains and that California will ask to see if you stopped on electronic logs.

There are a few mandatory ones. Some are just there for your safety and convenience. It will be marked accordingly.

I think coming in I80 over Donner pass has an area marked as trucks must stop for brake check. I think, most of my times over Donner were east bound with the return coming back some other way.

Never been through any mountains myself (yet) but my first reaction would be to stop, let them cool off (assuming I wasn't just using the Jake's) and do a six-pack.

In Canada, you'll get a ticket for blowing a brake check, regardless of weight or truck.

There is. Was following a guy last Friday (in a 4 wheeler) whose brakes were smoking before he got there, and he never even slowed down. 65 all the way. We passed him on one of the uphills but kept a close eye on the mirrors......

    Stupid is as stupid does.....

My god how much time do you lose by stopping?

    Why would you log it?

You stop, wait a minute or two and go.

And there's your typical brake check driver.

I get out and make sure nothing is smoking. And properly adjusted. And all that jazz. THAT'S a brake check. Not just making sure you can stop. But hey. We're the lazy generation these days.
