braking on big mountains...

Yea its called the point of no return.if you dont see them smoking time #### can get ugly quick.

 

we dont drive on ice,or throw chains.if you have to use chains you shouldnt be driving. that load can wait.

 

that was the first major mountain i done.

As a mechanic, I can tell what method of braking you use if the drums are burnt with blue scalloped gouges, and the shoes are cracked you fan or snub, your brakes. I have seen trucks with the "S" cam bushings burnt completely out of the tube. We have mountains and run 140,000 lbs. If the brakes are clean and drums flat and shoes solid, then you put 5 to 10 continuous preasure. You can buy an infrared temp gun for less that 50 dollars, go down a hill snubbing your brakes and then down shift to a stop and write down the tempature, then the next time you do the same hill, use steady preasure, and compare. Those temp guns are great for cheaking hubs, tires, even you coffee. You all play safe!

Donner isnt anything hard or special in the summer months if you know what your doing, been up an down that many times with no problems. Theres lots of signage up letting you know way ahead of time of the grade coming up and you have plenty of time to get in the right gear. Every time I ran that last summer was usually loaded to 78 to 79k and 9th gear with jakes was almost to slow for my truck(<< my truck 10 speed kw) Now in the winter donner is bad at times, the construction on donner made that road suck last summer for me. Donner can bite you in the tail if you're not paying attention, im sure we've all seen the walmart truck video of the truck losing it and killing himself and his team driver.
