The days of the overpaid union screw-off jobs are definately gone, thanks to the generation that is retiring now. My uncle used to talk about how the GM UAW workers at his plant used to find ways to screw off and the company did nothing about it. Go find a spot in the machinery and sleep most of the day... LOL.

While we are on the subject of HOS, how about regulating pay packages?

I don't know about you....But once I began working for myself....There's no turning back.....If trucking failed...I'd find another business to start.......

Whilst im not sure what benefit the restart changes will effect, forcing a 'lunch' stop part way through the day is a good thing, nothing worse than running alonside ( and head on past ) guys that are running straight through ( here in au we have to stop for 15 after 5 1/4 hrs and again for 15 after 7 1/4 then 30 after 10. ) they start to show fatiuge between the 7 and 10 hour mark.

from there on, there isnt actually a great deal more that can be done to enhance saftey, given that hours are no longer the issue, rather external factors become the main source of problems.. not that anything will stop the powers that be from persuing the .01% of change to appear to be doing....

A forced, one hour break is a momentum killer...as is waiting for a dock door while the clock dwindles to nothing!

How about a forced .50 cents a mile as well as a $11.00 a hour waiting time dock fee for trucking companys to pay their drivers!

Once upon a time workers went on strike because they were forced to work long hours without rest. Now we have workers wanting to strike because companies are forced to allow us to rest. WTH happened? Why do we have so many workaholics? There's more to life than money, folks.

Our ancestors fought for a 40hr workweek, yet we truckers work 70-80+ hours/week and we have drivers complaining that's not enough.

Here's an idea- why don't we fight for better wages, overtime pay, pay for non-driving work. Let's work smarter instead of working harder.

I don't know how many times the 14 hour window has saved me from the stupid dispatch demanding more miles and no care as to sleep or rest.

Their new demand is to change the log book to allow more hours of driving.

This is one of the few upsides to my electronic logbook. When its time to stop, you HAVE to stop. And no cutting breaks short either...

    Makes no difference to me.

I do not change the book to please them. I tell them where to go. I do not need the electronic logbook.
