You use the pilers just to avoid crawling under and grabbing the tie rods with your hands ?
What are you looking/listening for when tapping the arm the comes out of the steering box with a hammer ?Rideandrepair and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
And this is why i both get under the truck on my crawler at least every other week and have the shop that does the oilchange each month double check i didnt miss anything.
Had one crack on me once when i was test driveing a used car at a dealer. Ive been parinoid about them since.Rideandrepair and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
Should have been bad enough to fail annual inspection. That did not get that bad overnight.

Grease everything once a week on older trucks.You get a good look at everything while you're doing it.

You did well, I've seen photos of another O/O truck where I'm currently working, his came apart in the yard and went through the inside wall of the other 385 steer tyre. He was not happy...
That was on a C501 tri drive kenworth too, but pretty old. Steer tyres were fairly new though.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
No. Pliers give you more force to see a problem your hands might miss. You can also use a C-clamp to try and move them up and down. It's like using a bar to check your kingpins instead of just trying to wiggle the tire with your hands.D.Tibbitt, Rideandrepair and Powder Joints Thank this.
