being relatively new to this, i have been doing my research by calling brokers on some of the free freight boards and getting rates. what i was doing was finding where the better paying shipping lanes and better paying equipment type. some of the brokers that i have called have given me rate and said to the truck are they adding fsc or are the adding this in to there rate or should i ask. also are there any load boards that post there rates. i know most brokers you have to call.

Spot market rates, that is what you are calling on, will typically be an all in rate. FSC is not relevant in spot markets.
Rates are not posted on a level that I would like to see. In tight markets you will see more rates being posted. I see a lot more flatbed rates than van rates. But some of the paid boards will give you ranges for a lane. Much of tha is worthless as most of the information comes from brokers (trying to keep rates down). -
yea tell me about the brokers keeping cost down i call one guy he was a little bit anal to say it nicely . he had a load going from georgia to washington 2900 miles flatbed needed tarping and was proud to tell me $4800.00 to the truck . he asked do you want it and i said not at that rate.

You can't get a handle on rates by cold calling brokers. Anytime you call a broker asking about rates, you're at a disadvantage because they assume you are desperate. I've seen spot rates from the same shippers to the same destinations vary by as much as 100%, depending on the day of the week, time of month, and any number of other factors.
