Good to know! So it seems, that being patient and appearing to not care too much of what they offer pays off.

Last week my other truck came out from Yale, Mi for 2200. When the broker called me offering this load for $1500 I could hear emotions in his voice, so I told him my price and I knew he would give in. Yep, sounding calm definitely helps lol

Well, I had better start practicing my voice modulations before I start calling them in a few weeks. I'll do Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver" LOL.

Negotiation is, in my mind, about two things. Reading people (their "power" position), and your willingness to say "no".

You have to have a dialog with the seller (broker) to find out where their state of mind is. What is their urgency, are they working this load, is their mortgage due? The other half is about saying "no" and being good with the consequences. I teach my salespeople that there is a point in every negotiation where you have to say "no", so you might as well say "no" at a point where you're still happy with the outcome.

All I have to say is you need to walk a few miles in a brokers shoes. So what if this same broker making $200 off that load gets it on a truck with an idiot for a driver who somehow damages the load. Let me clue you in on something, insurance DOES NOT EVER PAY for stupid driver mistakes. Now the customer of the broker slaps them with a $100,000 claim, the broker goes to collect from the carrier who amazingly enough goes out of business. The owner of the freight IS GOING TO GET PAID and they don't care who they get it from or why, but they will get their money. So the broker who has a family to feed, a bond and expenses all of the sudden is on the hook for $100k. And he risked that for a mere $200 in GROSS revenue.

Everyone thinks brokering is easy cash but VERY FEW succeed!

One of my most profitable loads comes out of Saginaw. One mans outhouse is another's penthouse.

I suck at negotiations; the only time I get a great rate is when I really don't want the load and throw out a ####-you number that they take seriously.

I kinda wish there was a Saturn of brokers. Of course, they'd probably go out of business too...

In my second month of trucking, I had pulled for a particular broker that provided my outgoing load each week, and it was cheap. She liked me and felt sorry for me one day and said, "I'm gonna get you some more revenue". This was AFTER I'd agreed to haul the load ! Later on, I'd wised up and got in the groove, but how many brokers like that are out there ?
