I have 2 goldfish. How is that relevant to this conversation?

Just curious, what would a good rate be for that lane?

FYI - I believe cab drivers rates are usually set by municipalities. I have a friend in the cab business in Edmonton, I know they are there. The thinking is that the municipalities want the public to be able to count on the same service regardless of cab or company, without haggling.

I don't want the government setting my rates, but I have been on plenty of loads where I wish I had a meter running, let me tell you ! lol.

I guess my latest gripe is hearing, "I move these loads at this rate all the time". To me that is a meaningless statement. 1. You haven't moved it on my truck for that. 2. I book loads with brokers all the time that are content to make $25/load, you gonna match their rate ?

I dunno, I probably come across as full of gripes and complaints. For the most part that's not true, I'm mostly just entertained by the whole racket. For the most part I just try to accept the way things are with all it's flaws and just focus on understanding it for my advantage. Not attempting to change it. It is nice to hear feedback from others on how they view these things though, gives me a better perspective.

Are you a broker or dispatcher? What do you say is a good rate on that lane? I am curious. I have no clue. I will say from my perspective if it were solo dry van from LA to Queens that $1.78 a mile on 2800 miles is the better part of a week's work, burns up a lot of fuel, doesn't break even, and leaves me at the mercy of whatever generosity I could get outbound from NYC/NJ. I guess for somebody that load would be a "gold mine" though.

Rollin Coal: I wouldnt be much help on that lane. I run SE to SW produce freight. So right now rates going out to CA are cheap but coming back are very good. in January loads going to CA get much more expensive. I dont know what all the cost going into a truck end up adding up to, but 1.78 on 2800 miles is about 5k. Depending on MPG removing gas you would still have 3k left to pay bills, insurance.. etc.

Danny: I can definitely appreciate not wanting to hear, "i book loads at this rate all the time". I try my best not to say that because, exactly, it wasnt with you. But it is also annoying to hear, "i booked that load last month for $$" because markets changed, it could have been a load sent over late from a customer, or it just could have been dry in that area. I think that type of banter is inevitable though, since the broker, probably could find a truck at the rate he usually books at, just like the trucker, could find a load that paid what he was paid before as well.

I got $2.48 per mile going to New Jersey out of Cali.....

There's a reason why people call CH, "cheap and heavy".

OK first of all, is it dry? Produce? Which region of Cali? North CA? LA? These will all effect the rate. How many miles? These are details that may validate your argument if you had any.

I can appreciate the genius it took to think up "cheap and heavy", they should win an oscar for best writing. Again the rates going out to CA now are low, coming back pays quite well.

Did you get this load from CH?

The load I turned down from CH was directly comparable to the load I booked going to Jersey.

These two loads are directly comparable, only difference is the brokerage....

Same geographical area, (within 50 miles of each other), same equipment, same delivery expectation.... oh, wait.... there was one difference between them, now that I think of it.... the CH load was 40k...the load I booked was under 15k...lol....

The fact is, I booked a load going to Jersey for $2.48.... the other fact is that I had a CH broker call me asking about the availability of the equipment I had posted. The rate offered by CH, now mind you they called me, same as the other broker, but the rate offered was $5100...lol...$1.82....lol...here, the call went something like this....

CH; "Hi, I'm calling about a truck you have posted, is it still available?"

    Me; "yes"

CH; "we have a load going into Queens NY, would you be interested?

    Me; "Maybe. What is it?"

CH, "It's one pick one drop, palletized, no touch to the driver, and we're paying $5100..."

My response?; "Hold on... hmmm... that's $1.82....A dollar eighty two for a load going into NYC out of California is not going to happen, what's the best you can do?"

CH; "that is pretty much the best we can do, what would you be looking for?"

Me; "$2.28 or better, at this time I would consider $2.28"

CH; "We can't pay that much, that's more than we have in it...."

Me; "Ok, thanks, I've got to take this other call, bye"

The next call was another waste of time, but you have to wade through the offers to find the money.

Two hours later I had my load.

I make money both directions. When I hear a broker ask me, "If I may, can I ask, what are you attempting to do?", I reply, "I make money, if you have something that provides that opportunity then I'm interested in discussing this further with you, if not, then I need to be moving on...."

    LOL!!! (You are entertaining)

No, I did not. Have a nice day.

I guess i am missing the big punchlines here... So you didnt get the load from CH, but yet your are complainging about them? I'm glad i can entertain you, but im guessing anything shiny accomlishes that.

You have only told me the loads arer comparable, that isnt what i asked, I asked if they were reefer or dry etc... It seems to me the only time weight matters to a driver is if it is heavy. If we have a load ar 13,000 lbs all i hear from carriers is how weight doesnt effect their costs and that they need a full market rate. So i really just brush off all the "heavy load nonsense" you are providing.

If you make money both ways from NYC to CA and back, what are you complainging about? I guess im lost here?
