In the late 80's we delivered between 3 to 5 loads daily from Lime Kiln Maryland Cement works to Arlington VA Pentagon Silos at a rate of about 54 dollars a load paid as company drivers. Working 14 hours or so a day starting at 2 am arrival at yard prior to rolling that truck at 3 am. Takes a hour to get rid of the load. So 5 hours spent blowing. About two hours spent dealing with loading depending on how many trucks are in line at Lime Kiln. (Takes about 12 minutes to load to 80000 platform scale under bulk silo.) Rest of it is driving. Up to about roughly... 120 miles round trip per load. So potentially 600-700 miles daily.

If we did 5 loads that's about around 300 dollars give or take gross for the day. Times 5 days that's 1500 gross. Minus 35% withholding etc knock you down to about a thousand or a little less in a perfect week. But you work 70 hours a week for it.

This would be 1980's money. Equal to about 3000 a week today in our inflated dollars.

However. Bulk is not that simple. When a trailer tank fails and breaks checkvalves etc there is a real BIG problem on whoever owns that trailer.

Most companies that benefit from Bulk will buy a junker truck and trailer just enough to make deliveries happen at minimum wage drivers from their plant and cement loading. That way they avoid having to pay O/O outside rates. Saves them a hell of alot of money.

In our company Bulk was cheap and a hard way to make your money. Gasoline tanker work in those days was twice the pay easily exceeding 1000+ weekly with hardly more than a few loads delivered daily. Essentially half the work and time. Anyone who was bulk had to wait until 25 for insurance purposes before being trained up for gasoline in those days.
