One time my ex wife and I left a Denny's with a doggie bag with most of her meal in it. A man asked for spare change for some food. I'd left all mine as a tip and we offered the leftovers. He took them and thanked us.

While I was reading the posts in this thread, an able bodied young man came up to my truck's door begging for something. I thought it was quite ironic. Of course, I'm at the T/A just south of ATL, so go figure. I have never been accosted so much as in the truck by those that won't work.

One time I was changing an alternator belt on a weekend, 1000 miles from home, which is written on the side of my truck, and this guy comes up with a sob story as I'm on top of the engine. He got a few choice words.

I could care less if someone is a homeless vet, doctor, truck driver, whatever. I work hard and sacrifice a lot while on the road to provide for my family, I will not squander that and take food out of daughter's mouth for someone who makes poor choices in life. There are SO MANY charity programs out there that help the willing turn around their lives, the guy pounding on my door will simply get disdain and just a shake of my head.

    Had one today:

Walks up to me and does this steering wheel thing with his hands and at the time it was really loud so i figured he was asking if i was a driver like most people do, so i said yes. Then he hands me a little piece of cardbord with his sob story about how he is a deaf mute and is trying to get money to take care of his 4 yr old son, at the bottom it asked for Donations STARTING AT $40 :biggrin_2559: So i handed it back and said sorry i dont have any cash and walked away. I really doubt thats his situation on so many levels but thats not how you support a kid or whatever he can work....Lazy

Oh my personal favorite was a guy in West Memphis. Said his family(wife and daughter) had travelled to West Memphis to help spread the good word and had fallen on hardship as their bus had broken down and were no unable to continue their "tour" until repairs were effected.I politely suggested he pray because the last time I talked to God he told me that "He whom helps himself eats!"

You know for such a religious man he sure commenced to cussing:biggrin_2552:

I used to deliver on the south side of chicago, and seen many people living in tough times. I saw a lot of folk in need of help in one area, then saw a Church about 100ft away, I would always open my pass. window and throw all my change out near the curb in front of the Church. I hope it helped someone. Give to someone, and make someones life happy, for the moment.

Some might be legit and some might be scammers, but I am really getting tired of being accosted by panhandlers. I've been approached on fuel islands then go inside and ask the clerk "where else can I spend $700 dollars and be bothered for money?" Funny story, I stop a lot at the Love's in Ormond Beach as my mother lives there. I get accosted almost everytime so one day while cleaning off my windshield a young couple approach me. I immediately assume they are gonna ask for money. Didn't notice at first but they were dressed decent with polo shirts with some logo. Suprisingly they asked if they could interview me. They were doing a research documentary for their college class and the environment of long distance truckers. Kinda different and they eventually sent the link to it after it was completed.

I live in the hood. Always have. I get hit up almost every single time I go to a gas station or fast food restaurant.

Usually they walk toward me, make eye contact and say "Hey....." and I say "I dont have any money" and walk away.

I wont give them any money but..Heck I will give him a can of soup and depending on how many packs I have left out of a carton I will give a pack of smokes too...If he is really hungry he will eat the soup and I am sure he is tired of smoking butts out of the ashtray or off the ground....it kinda goes back to "what you do to the LEAST of my brothers you do unto me....YOU never know who the BUM is....are you gonna be a good sumariton or one of the ones who just walk by....One day it just might be you needing help and you get what you give....just my opinion....
