Driving through a construction zone in Chicagoland today. Was passing a truck and our mirrors barely touched. Maintained dead center of my lane (as shown by dash cam). Other driver hit a divot in the right lane and slid over a foot or two to the left, but he was still in his lane as well (besides his mirror lol). Folded my mirror back, didn’t fold his and no damage to his that I could see while next to him. Probably a scuff on his, but couldn’t see in rain. I pulled in front of him and pulled over a couple miles later when there was a shoulder available. Called into my company and sent pictures and the other driver never stopped. I got the ‘you’re fine. No damage, no big deal’ from my safety manager.

Anything else I should’ve done? Assuming it’d be considered my fault or no fault since I was the passing truck, even though he slid over, but he never stopped, so wasn’t able to get pictures/info from other truck. Didn’t call police. No negative marks on my record thus far, 3 years in, so figured calling in to safety and playing it safe beats risking a hit and run.

you're most likely gonna have to sit and get a speech on how you should have NEVER passed that truck, in a work zone.

you already told the safety dept what you did....right..??

this most likely will show up on your company file/record as an incident, and depending on what the shop finds (maybe a broken wire inside the mirror's heating element?)

this can up the incident to an accident.

gotta control yourself in work zones.

I never bothered "telling any safety department" about little "events".
One can be parked at a tricky twuck slop and get "bumped" on a Mirror by anyone and that's insignificant for those non backing "profeesional dwivers".
I figured, NO BREAKAGE, NO PROBLEM.
Some things are better in the non mentioned department.

    NO SPEEDING IN WORK ZONES!!
NO PARKING ON SHOULDERS EXEPT FOR EMERGENCY!!
A mirror is not an emergency.

Agreed with the no speeding. Company I’m at is pretty strict about speeding, so easier for me to just follow what’s posted, even outside of construction zones.

I did contemplate the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ approach since he didn’t even bother stopping, but in the age of technology, I’d rather be the one to tell and take the minor incident than have a dash cam footage from a following car pop up in their email.

I've had 2 kinda similar incidents. One time I was parked at a truck stop, late at night, tight parking. Guy trying to park next to me hit my hood mirror, which is one pivot, and put a small scratch and crack in it. Guy was really sorry about it and really nice and no significant damage was done. I spotted him into his parking spot and that was the end of it. I did point it out on my next 'damage inspection' and the guy told me that was a nothing burger.
Other time, 8 was headed into a construction zone and they had an automatic temporary light set up. I hit it and knocked it over with my trailer. Due the construction zone, it was several miles down the road before I could pull over and stop. No noticeable damage to my trailer. So started calling around. To find who I needed to talk with about it. I think I started by calling the county roads department. Anyway, had to call around to about 4 different departments and such until I finally got ahold of who I needed to talk to. Guy just kind of chuckled and said don't worry about it. I broke the bar that swings down to stop traffic, but it was just a piece of 1 by 2 with reflective tape on it and that when they looked, they realized it was probably set up too close to the road edge to begin with.
So everything's a judgement call. But, if it has no real significance or damage, I don't worry about it.
That said, a dashcam is your friend!!! If you don't have one, highly advised to get one. My company has a forward facing dashcam, but I don't have direct and easy access to its video. So one of the first things I bought when I started driving was a dashcam of my own. Haven't really needed it, but I can assure you it brings alot of piece of mind!!!

It sounds like how you handled it is the best thing you could have done, aside from not trying to pass.

This happens a LOT. Never get in that right hand lane or get next to someone in the right hand lane under one of those bridges.

Some guy did that to me in new mexico.

Folded in my mirror on the right because it was a little windy.

I just pulled over moved my mirror back where it was and continued with my life.

Why the hell would I make a phone call?

Hell, I wouldn’t even try to pass on a narrow construction road. To many idiots these days. I would’ve waited until for wider lanes or pass the construction zone. Even if you’d stayed in your lane, anything can happened, especially in rain. I wouldn’t blame your company if they wrote you up.

It's your fault IMO. Your Safety guy sounds laid back. Lucky you!
