My set of 16' HD ramps got stolen. Instead of replacing them, I'm looking at buying a trailer with beavertails. I haul a lot of equipment / vehicles that load from a dock or a shipper's portable set of ramps. Have any of ya'll experienced problems bumping docks with beavertails? Wilson & Reitnouer look like they could bump a dock, but the Dorsey looks like those hinges would get crushed the first time you tried to bump a dock. Any other manufacturer you would recommend or stay away from? Dorsey Wilson Reitnouer FYI, locks on your ramps are worthless if they don't prevent bolt cutter jaws from getting around them. They cut through 8 locks to get the 4 ramps and the 2 transition pieces. With the battery powered angle grinders today, even locks with those protective collars on them probably won't hold up. I guess if they want them bad enough, they'll find a way.
In the Dorsey, where the lights are built into the ramps, I would install one of those GPS trackers. Someone would wake up to a very ugly person quoting Bible scriptures like Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Something about vengeance and great anger.
“Have any of ya'll experienced problems bumping docks with beavertails? “ “ Any other manufacturer you would recommend or stay away from?” Dorsey Wilson Reitnouer This is a 51’ Doonan Specialty Platinum series. Great for loading and unloading equipment under 40k up and down the ramps. Not designed for bumping docks as you can see by the picture taken from the back. Gotta be ever so slow and careful easing up to a dock with these trailers…
I normally hide an apple air tag on the trailer when I drop it if I’m not going to be around for a few days. Never thought about a tracker for the ramps. Not a bad idea though. Apple has started alerting people that have iPhones if it thinks you’re tracking them, so they aren’t as good as they used to be. Do thieves use apple or android?
Back in the day, this guy in a pickup truck would come into the TA Baytown TX and look for ramps and stands, basically any extras on a flat or step, knock on the sleeper and wait. If driver answered, wrong truck/sorry to bother. No answer, he would steal everything. I had a room at a motel in Channelview that cost me $200/week, so I was there. You try to warn as many drivers as you can, BUT it happens. On my motorcycle, I put a monimoto tracker on it. Has a key fob like a car. If someone touches Hades without the key fob, monimoto instantly notifies There are aftermarket tags and trackers that operate in the same manner. Protect yourselves and your livelihood, gents.
Mine were stolen from the Beltway 8 Travel Plaza on the north side of Houston. Signs posted everywhere saying that they are not responsible for theft, so I’m sure it happens pretty often. Police wouldn’t even take the time to file a report. Guess they knew it was a waste of time. Insurance took care of it though. At first they did try to say ramps are grouped in with “securement equipment” that isn’t part of the trailer, but after explaining that they were mounted on the trailer, were financed with the trailer purchase, and were included in the insured value of the trailer, they ended up paying the full value.
I sometimes pull a steel Dorsey 53 with beaver tail and ramps , the hinges stick out like that one . Works fine with portable ramps at equipment dealers not so much at a dock.
If you caught someone stealing your gear and put a cap in the coolo, THEN the police want to show up and do something. The laws are designed to protect criminals.
