Two years into driving and I finally had to throw chains for the first time yesterday in Colorado. It seemed to take me forever to put them on but I'm guessing like anything else it will go faster next time. I was careful not to drive any faster than 30, though other trucks were blowing past me whether they had chains on or not.
The chains stayed on fine, but I noticed on other trucks that it looks like they stay on tighter when you add bungee cords...anyone know what size cords work well to pair with chains?
Thanks!
Dave

They sell those octopus looking chain keepers in most cold weather truckstops. I use 3-12" on each chain.

The smallest ones. 10”’or so. Make sure to retighten them as soon as you get a chance. Also place bungees so they won’t bite into the tire. Hook facing away from direction that tire rotates

Installed correctly you won't need any bungees. Many years ago we had a factory rep come by our shop in Alaska and gave us a demo on installing and maintenance of tire chains. He said put them on as tight as you can get them, after you drive a mile or so stop and check them, retighten them again if loose. Most new tire chains are longer than needed and should be cut to fit the tire.We would fit them on a brand new tire so there would usaully be 1 extra link on the siderails. We had over 100 trucks and pieces of equipment that stayed chained up 4 or 5 months a year.
In Feb 2022 I had to iron up this truck to get out of Ft.Worth when that freezing rain hit.I only had to go about 20 miles before I got onto thawed pavement that morning.Pulled over and took the chains off out near Jacksboro.dave01282000, Flat Earth Trucker and AModelCat Thank this. -

Tarp straps / bungee cords get hard and lose their elasticity when cold.
I used ones that were made from inner tubes. They stayed stretchy when cold and worked best for helping to keep tire chains tight.
You did good to keep your speed down. A loose chain can do a lot of damage to air lines and brake pots, fenders, etc.Flat Earth Trucker and dave01282000 Thank this. -
21 inch bungees. The rims are 22.5 inches. Or 24.5 if the case may be.
Tighten them as good as you can. I drove a few feet and retightened.
Bungees not needed then.Flat Earth Trucker and dave01282000 Thank this. -
If you have cam-lock tighteners on your chains and you install them correctly you probably won't need bungee cords.
If it makes you feel better, go ahead and put them on.AModelCat, Flat Earth Trucker and dave01282000 Thank this. -
