I've used the octopus type bungees on a 4wd for an entire winter and have never had a problem. I do not have them for the big truck, but if I were ever to go over the rocks, I would seriously consider a pair.
On this bored you will have guys that do their jobs, and have to chain up every day. Guy's who run the mountains and get stuck chaining up every could days. And guys who carry rusty chains on their trucks, and that makes them experts.
I'm honestly in the middle, I have chained up m pick up far more then a semi, though that has wore steal toe slippers once in a while.
My advice is, just buy the buggies. Use then front and back. If you find you have to put on chains frequently then buy an octopus set, I believe like chains they even make then according to tire size now. The worst thing that happens to you, if you listen to me, is you end up with a bunch of bunggies that are really useful for a lot of other things.

My old mentor used 18" (I think), and had a unique way of using them.
He would interlock them so that each cord would turn 90 degrees at the center.
So one would be attached at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock, the next would attach at 3'oclock - loop around the first at the center - and then hook the other end at 6 o'clock.
    4 in all.
He basically made his own spider.
