I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine (yes I have friends) and she was telling me that when you get fired from a trucking job the company HAS to buy you a ticket home, I told her she was wrong but she kept insisting she was right
I was with a company and they deducted my pay for a bus ticket, and then I was with another company who did the same thing. she said they were breaking the law and I told her she was wrong. I told her that you're lucky if they don't say "you're fired, you have 15 minutes to clean out your truck or we'll call the police"
who's right and who's wrong?
bus tickets home

I'm not sure where such a "law" could be found in any state's wage and employer/employee related laws. I'm sure you can come up with scenarios where it would seem the carrier would be expected to do so, but I seriously doubt there is anything but "being a compassionate employer" that would oblige any carrier to do so in 99% of the OTR trucker firing scenarios.
If you get it great, but no driver should ever quit or do something stupid and expect to be provided transportation home because they are more then likely going to be sorely mistaken. -
Just ask her to show you the law that requires a company you're fired from to purchase a bus ticket home for you.

Wow Jabber1990 being fired twice? Imagine that... How could such a thing happen?
MJ1657, Swedish Chef and REO6205 Thank this. -
I don't think there is any formal law or rule covering this. If there is l've never seen it. I always tell young drivers to keep enough money to buy a bus ticket home from any place. For the most part a trainee can be fired any place or time. However a regular driver will be fired while at a terminal. So depending on the situation you might be in your home terminal. The day USA Truck fired me I was in Roanoke Virginia. My FM called me and informed me then asked me if I wanted a bus ticket. I declined the offer and asked a friend to pick me up on Monday. This was Friday I stayed in a hotel all that weekend on their dime. Spent most of that time making calls and by that Monday had lined up two job offers. 10 days later I was in orientation.

the last time this happened to me I didn't have enough money for a bus ticket home. I barley had enough money to FedEx my stuff home -
They are not obligated to send or take you anywhere, but some will try to at least be helpful
Canned Spam Thanks this. -
they were nice enough to let me sit in the idling truck for 3 days while I cleaned out the truck and thought about what I wanted to do!

I think that's what he is leaning towards that money needs to be put up for emergencies... If not cash at least have a credit card that is with you to be used only in the event of an emergency.

I hadn't been paid in 2 months, and I can't get a credit card
