I am a small fleet owner I was wondering if anyone has used a business consultant for analyzing their business/business plan. The reason I am asking is that I have a friend that also owns a small fleet that just keeps getting smaller. He is constantly making mistakes and is losing an incredible amount of money. He will not listen to me at all and he seems to now be competing with me and will do the opposite of whatever I do to prove me wrong. I have asked him about this and he said we all run our businesses differently. Here are some examples of the huge errors he has made all of which I discourage him and advised against:

    • Wanted to take out a business loan of $400,000. Found a lender and signed for the amount. The lender came to his truck and brought all the paperwork, then asked for a cashiers check for 12K. My friend was then told by several people that you never pay to get a loan but he didnt listen and subsequently lost the 12K. The person he wrote the check to is currently in jail for scamming people out of 1.5 million.
    • He leased a truck and was given a different truck when he arrived to pick it up, he was leasing from an out of state leasee. The truck had more than 100,000 more miles than was stated. He had already registered and insured, so he just took it and went down the road. Over the next 4 years he spent over 80,000 on repairs. Two bake outs and everything that could go wrong did.
    • He fired a driver because he wanted the driver to work every other week until he could get a new truck for him. The waiting period for the new truck was 12 weeks and he wanted to work using the drivers truck. The driver said no that he had bills to pay and the then he fired him.
How would anyone approach someone who is failing miserably? I consider him a friend and colleage but its almost like he is trying to fail. His latest blunder was he bought a car on ebay and paid with cash cards, needless to say he never got the car. I did all I could to tell him not to do it. He ended up getting really pissed about losing the money but just will not listen. ugh... anyone have any advice???

I don't think a business consultant will help, the guy is lacking common sense

He's already got a business consultant: you! Maybe if you write him an invoice for your advice he will think it's worth something...

Or let him fail, then buy all his equipment on the cheap, hire him as a driver....

Some folks shouldn’t be in business. Not trying to be ugly, but it’s the truth

There is nothing you can do. Some people aren't cut out for it. I have a good friend that was in trucking but not anymore. Strange thing is that he is far from dumb, not what I would call a go get'er but far from dumb.

Just allow him to fail and worry about your own life.

You can't help somebody who doesn't know he needs help.

Well, if you know everything your friend should do- follow your own advice. Don’t make the same mistakes. You’ll be fine.
