The core issue is the last two questions in the OP. -
Keep bullying your way into that turn, and you'll find that first car now has fifteen cars behind them, and now you have fifteen cars behind you, and now the intersection is gridlocked. If you can't make the right hand turn, then go straight, turn around, and make the left.
With 1,000,000 incident-free miles, you should know this.Magoo1968, blairandgretchen, IH Truck Guy and 5 others Thank this. -
I'd say you're in the wrong 100% if the car was already stopped there. Its on you to make sure the road you're turning onto is clear. Its not on the car to backup out of your way. Never backup in traffic.

A few seconds after I made the turn, I thought I had done right. Looking back at it now with more time to think about it, i think maybe I should have stopped on Elm street and not made the right hand turn until Oak street was clear.LtlAnonymous Thanks this. -
I just bullied my way through the intersection lol. -
wis bang, LtlAnonymous and expedite_it Thank this.

And i would say I have around 1.3 million accident free miles, not 1.0 million. -
