I've bought several used CB's. First what I do is I ask them if they can hook up the CB in their car/truck and I'll have mine on and we'll engage in a conversation, just so I can see how well it works, and how it sounds from my end.

If they don't have a spare antenna then I bring an extra and ask them to hook up. If they don't want to then the deal is off.

Not sure if it's worth 80 bux though...you could probably get it cheaper if you look.

On-Line you should be able to find Cobra 29 BL Chromes all day long for under $100... Even the New 29 LX LE can be had for $119 to $124...

I would never suggest buying a "Used" radio off Craig's List, or eBay unless your prepared for the radio to not be exactly as it's described...

Sellers on these sites often will make used stuff sound better than what it was Bran-New just to sell it...

When they say stuff like "I give this radio a 9 out of 10" means nothing.... There "9" may only be a "4" to someone else...

    -just a "FYI"....

Before buying...always do a little research first and see what the radio is selling for New...

Add qrz.com to that list many radios on that site are sold as " Problem " radios and many at prices higher than new. Any radio over 20 years at best is a gamble and most likely not supported.

I may be wrong but I believe if the finals are damaged, it will not transmit at all, even in the truck stop parking lot. I actually thought once because my radio wasn't getting out (and I had good SWR's) and thought because I could only be heard a mile or two (by the other party) the finals were going bad - was informed if they were bad it wouldn't be heard at all.

But yes though...good call on the SWR thing...

True. If the final is fried...Your not going to get out 3 feet! But it it's a dual final radio, you can have one bad final, but still be able to talk...You just wont have as much power or swing with one blown.

I have a Galaxy 99 that has one blown...Normally, I would have about a 40w swing, but right now I'm down to just a 15w swing, and the radio still sounds just fine.
