Does this engine sound normal? I hear something, but I don't know much about these engines, so I don't know what's normal.

Sounds like a exhaust leak
-
ha know that sound all too well. Always bothered me. sounds like a dampner is next on your list
Judge Thanks this. -
Sounds like a diesel to me.
-
if you listen closely, you can hear a different rattle at the front of the engine where it sounds like a loose or worn out belt tensioner pulley. Thats the sound he is referring to if im on point tnight
-
and that motor has way more than 1100 hours on it unless it was overhauled. The hour meter cycled over. Most the time during an inframe, the old tensoner never gets swapped out. So that dampner is beyond its time to be replaced. and do it now
-
It has about 7700 miles on it. It's a military truck. I pulled the records on it, hasn't been rebuilt.
-
Take belt off and see if noise goes away.
-
That's a good idea. I will report back this weekend.
-
Sounds like the cam is going out of it. Every other c-12 I've ever rebuilt had a cam out of it. Pull the vale covers and check the clearance on the valves. 0.015int and 0.025ext. If you have way to much clearance your cam is bad
