C-15 or C-16

    SOME WHAT The rear of the oil cooler has the water outlet farther to the rear of the engine on the higher h/p for better cooling on the rear cylinder.

    Yes BUT!!! keep in mind as the C18 has a longer stroke the rods are different length. The C18 went to 4 bolt rods as the single bolt rods hit the side of the block in a C18. Now the C15 Acert and C18 all run the same 4 bolt rods and they make up the difference in the piston pin bore to suit whatever Comp ratio they want. Also they stepped up the Big end Diameter when they went to 4 bolt rods.

    The only differences in the Blocks are things like O ring plugs instead of NPT plugs. Extra bolt hols for exhaust guards on later blocks, Machining on both sades for Startermotor so you can fit right or left. Bottom line is the crank will determine the Engine size not the block.

    The earlier 3406 blocks are different and when they went to the C block they re sculptured the Block to remove the old Cam shaft bore as it was a weak area and the re sculpturing add more integrity into the bock adding strength to stop it flexing like the older 3406E blocks did. at the end of the day you can make them all into whatever you like as so much is interchangeable but reliability is a problem with higher HP on the older blocks

    No real need to, the 3406E (5ek style) came out in a C16 bore/stroke configuration called the 3406E 15.8 liter, 5DS prefix if I remember correctly.

    True, the cooler outlet was moved to the rear of the block to cool cylinder 6 better and stop head gasket and liner fretting problems associated with number 6, now we have head gasket and liner problems with 4/5 ######:biggrin_25510:.

    Hello Far Call:
    Thanks for the C18 info. Just for conversation, how about the C18(7.2) crank with a 5.4 or 5.5 bore? Would these combinations work?

    Hi David,
    Never seen a C18 with 5.4" bore fitted but anything is possible "if" you have the parts.
    There is no pistons that will have the gudgen bore high enough on a 5.4 piston to take the C18 Crank stroke so you would have to have pistons made by Mahle Special and they wont make them unless you order X amounts of Sets.. Mind you the Cummins Signature engine has the Mahle pistons as does the Cat C18 so you have two major compeditors in Cummins and Cat using same brand pistons...:biggrin_2554: Mind you some old Die hard Cat men wont believe that!!

    Thanks guys for the info!!!!!!!! I have 5ek with a broken crank,#6, should the block line bore be check ????????
