Going to a Cat dealer (or any dealer for that matter) doesn't necessarily mean that it'll get done right. There are plenty of incompetent wannabe wrench turners out there, even at dealerships.

If you want it done right, best thing to do is find someone with good references or to learn to do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

I agree, I have seen some top end set ups that were so out of adjustment that valves have failed. Engine brake set up is very important to operation and strength of the brake. If you have a lot of miles on the housings, get a Jake tuneup kit installed during the set up. It will also help fine tune the brake.

Seems as my dads 1LW always braked harder than my MBN, even when i had the stock turbo and manifold, i never built more than 18lbs of boost while his will do 25 even on his C16 turbo. Both have jake brakes and adjusted by me per service manual.

DDS the 1LW has 57s, ill stay in touch bout what we talked about earlier.

So your saying the Cat Jakes on your 1LW works better than old NTC Cummins?

I know they work very well. :biggrin_25525:

The jakes on my old 3406E worked better than the C-16 and the C-16s are quite good.

The braking power can be increased by increasing the lash, try your settings at the top of spec, they give you .003 +/- on your setings, set the lash to the loose side. If you go above spec, it can get stronger but take the chance of breaking rocker arms. If you go to far the jake will get weaker.

My neighbor was telling me that I believe it was the pac brake is junk at least on a CAT and that Jake brand is the way to go on a CAT.

    Ever heard of that theory?

yes, Pac brakes are bad for the housings cracking and for the slave piston bore wearing. You can overhaul a Jake housing, most Pac brake housings can be not due to main housing wear. I have replaced alot of Pac housings with used overhauled Jake brakes. Customer reports night and day difference.

The Jakes on my 1LW 3406E always seemed weak to me. Now after reading some posts here, I'm sure they are. Down the East side of Monteagle, still only gets to about 14psi of manifold pressure. Overhead just done. Suggestions?
