They are very common in Mexico. Most of the ones I've seen were tandem axle. Might be able to sneak one across the border. :)

Hmmm, maybe I should be looking South instead of North.

When you start talking about RV's. perhaps you are thinking about another contraption that allows the transporters of horse trailers as a double, smaller tires, narrower axles. Also from Montana is a device called TOWALL that hooks to a SUV 's regular tube hitch and allows the vehicle to put a 5th wheel camper.

I've seen that. Over $8,000 for a light weight deal that hooks into a 2" receiver and 2 chains. It may work, but I want something a little stronger to hook my 18k pound trailer to that's getting pulled down the highway by a 400+ horse tractor. I could probably build that in my shop. I could probably build a C dolly as well but if I could find one built and ready to go I'd be way ahead. There are a few decent converters around here for under $2,000 and cheaper if you want to put some work into them. Didn't figure a used C dolly would cost much more but they seem hard to find. It would be tough to build one for the same money with the steering axle. I'd also have to go through the title and vin process on a homemade trailer. I don't want the weakest link in my set up to be the hitch my trailer is hooked to.

Eliminating that extra pivot would make a doubles setup much easier to back using one of those. It reminds me of how double covered wagons work. The front trailer has an extended frame with a fifth wheel on it and an extra axle underneath. They are actually pretty easy to back with. Nothing like a regular set of doubles.

Just curious as to why you need the dolly? Can't you just hook the trailer to the truck? Or have you got a body job?

Want to use a singled sleeper cab with a hauler bed. Need to be able to haul the jeep on the bed, pull the camper behind. If I have a bed long enough to fit a jeep and hook the 5th wheel, I'm back to tandem and probably 300" wheel base. I want the short singled wheelbase to keep it maneuverable. When we don't take the jeep, I want to be able to hook right to the tractor, leave the converter sitting at home. With the C dolly I have the option to gain the length without a compromise in wheelbase because it's steerable. Should be the best of both worlds.
