Years ago, I hauled shingles, and bagged cement for an O/O, who had a small trucking company. Back then, he paid 30% of gross to the driver, and we got to see the freight bills. Made some decent money.
All depends really for my self Within 100mils 50 miles one why I get 2.50 a ton I pull 30 tons most trips 100-200 miles one why I get .73 loaded .63 empty 200+ one why I get .68 loaded .58 empty
When you are pulling a load that pays the company .80cpm and you get 20% of that you will see the extream down fall of % as a company driver. You have no control over the loads or the pay this way. Thay take cheap freight you pull it for such.
If you pick percentage you'll get lots of long runs If you pick mileage you'll get lots of short runs. That's how it works
The whole idea of "percentage pay" is to keep everybody motivated to keep rates and production as high as possible. What carrier WANTS to haul for 80 Cents Per Mile? i.e haul cheap freight? what's good for the carrier is good for the driver in a percentage model. What's bad for the driver is bad for the carrier [in a percentage model] (and assuming the pay platform is done correctly and fairly) No carrier/driver will be around long hauling for peanuts.
Megas haul them for cheap, there is .80 cpm loads on borads and people seem to be hauling them. I know Knight gets paid around .78cpm to haul Anhuser loads out of Fort Collins, CO. They are the #1 loads that they use to move trucks around. % for a driver as a company is not always best. You are at the total mercy of whatever the carrier decides to pull. If they feel like sending you on a 900 mile trip for around .13 to .15 cpm your the one getting screwed. Keep in mind that megas and some companys can drive there costs down lower then a O/O between discounts at the pump and on tires and buying power trust me there not taking much of a loss If any.
also whether cpm or % depend as to whether or not you got a police riding in truck with you or not,aka qualcomm,ELDs etc etc etc
Even with fuel prices what they are i highly doubt anybody is hauling .80cpm freight, just figure driver getting bottom pay at .35cpm and fuel is $1.80 a gallon, overhead on that load would be minimal .65 cpm, if a load at that rate went 2000 miles the net revenue to the truck would only be $340
You believe what you would like, I have seen the screen of the line haul on the loads. Again they are used to move trucks around and for backhauls to better areas.
