I'am running a 06 c15 550hp and it's getting 5.8 to 6.2 pulling flat and rgn running 78,000 to 85,000lbs daily the only issue's so far was a turbo due to the fact the sleaves in the exhaust manifold broke ,water regulaters and a senser other than that pretty reliable and pulls good, i've had cummins and detroits and you could'nt give me a detroit the cummins was a good motor the 2 detroits i had were junk imo.
C15, is it MPG and issues suicidal ?

Thanks for this....definitely i will get an detroit, those turbo issues are also a very frequent complaint in CAT engine....to don't mention the price when you need parts, inframe overhaul and any issue that certainly happen. I'm convinced that DETROIT is the best choice for what i will haul, for many reasons. And you know what? I never heard anybody complaint about a detroit....they looks like those old beetle Volskswagen engine's that runned on air system, projected for the hardest situations. I will search for a DET, just don't want that CAT thing anymore...
Thanks also for the tip on the tires, i will pay attention on this specific point, MPG is all that I need this time, so any 0.5 mpg saved will represent a lot in the end of the year. THANKS! Be careful out there. -
Really? I thought that Detroit was ok, not an excellent engine, of course, but something reliable, cheap, economic and easy to fix anywhere, anytime.. on...what was the issue with yours?
Thanks for the advice. -
Yeah, i heard those EGR are hurting when it comes to MPG...Do you think one 04/05 shaker with a detroit engine is an pre-EGR ( i don't know really when they started to built those new systems...i mean what year...)
Thanks for your reply! Be safe out there. -
You can find a few early 2004 trucks with 2003 pre-egr engines. True 2004 engines are egr, or in a bridge engine in a Cat.

thats a detroit right there..

The parts are higher on Cats but they don't break if you take care of them. I have to wonder about drivers blowing turbos in a Cat. I dont know how they drive. Do they allow for cooldown time before killing the engine. Do they pay attention to pyro temps if they've got some horses or do they just mash all the time without care or regard? Fuel mileage is up to the driver.

I lost 2 chargers on the same C15 with 2 different drivers (one was me) not sure what caused it but the shaft broke on both. However while mine took a day to fix a friend with a S60 Detroit had to replace all the gears on on the front of his engine thanks to a broken bull gear which took almost a week. Our last Cummins lost a couple injectors and melted pistons and was a complete money pit, what's this mean? Nothing, they all break, some parts for one brand are cheaper while other parts are cheaper for another brand. We buy what works for our application, what we have had the best luck with and what sells easily. Blanket statements like "Detroit always gets the best fuel mileage, or is the most reliable" don't work in the real world. Nothing against Detroit, but when people claim super high or low numbers you should look at how the truck is being used. The guy with the Cat might be getting 4.5mpg but he's probably not pulling a dry van hauling cardboard. Apples to apples pulling the same loads on the same roads your not going to find a huge MPG difference between any brand engine. The driver has more to do with how efficient a truck is than the color of the engine ever could.Braazooka Thanks this.

Sure, there are so many variables in this specific subject, i couldn't just say "this is the best for this or that" there is no best, there is a sort of options down, it's an almost impossible get a common-sense straighten..But all you guys have their experienced point of view and i love to hear all of them.
Thanks. -
I agree, i've talked with some O/O that are happy and are loyal to their CAT engine, sure the drivers habits make a lot of diference in ANY engine, not just i CAT...you can make a poor Detroit live million miles taken care of it ,no doubt...i would say fuel milage is 90% driver and 10% engine, but those 10% makes a big $$...Thanks for your opinion!
