Well last night on my way back from Iowa i was about 20 miles from the MN border on I35 when all of a sudden the truck went bang. Then i heard what sounded like the driveshaft spinning on the ground. I thought i blew a u joint, but when i pulled over the noise continued. I shut her down, got out on the pass side and saw oil running down the shoulder of i35. If anyone was up here you know it was about -10 last night and i sat there waiting for a tow for 4 hrs. I thought i threw a rod, but after further investigation the oil was coming out of the trans inspection plate. So it must be leaking out of the rear main. I am wondering if the crank snapped off? I am waiting to hear from CAT as to what they found. This is in a 07 379 (ex TMC truck) with 378k on it. No warnings of any kind, she just went boom. Also the esc plus coverage expires on 12-21-2010. So couldn't have happened at a better time.
c15 went bang

Wow, talk about warranty timing. Now we will all pray that whatever is found is covered under warranty. Don't let them weasel out of it.
Four hours, you must have gotten a little chilly by then.orion3814 Thanks this. -
Yeah it did. I too also hope that what ever it is will be covered. It has the esp plus so its the top of the line warranty, but like you said hopefully they don't try to get around it.

does the noise change with the clutch pedal in?
-
no, i don't believe it did. I can't say i remember too much as it happened so fast. The whole truck was shaking really bad though.
-
hopefully all is ok--last crank i saw break put a big old window in the block
-
Ok, CAT just called me. So far the clutch grenaded, but they haven't dug into it far enough to see where the oil is coming from. They said it could be anything from the trans to the crank.

I don't know if it's true with C-15's, but I have a buddy that had a '99 3406 that did about the same thing. No warning, just CRUNCH! The crank broke and it took the transmission with it.
Cat bought him a new engine and tranny. Seemed like they had a certain series of serial numbers where the cranks were built with inferior steel or something. Said Cat wouldn't tell you about it, but if you found out about it, they'd pay. Something to that effect.
Might check it out if it was your crank that broke. I'll ask him to see if he remembers any specifics and if it included C-15's. He's usually pretty good about researching that stuff.
Sure hope your warranty covers everything. I was looking at a lot of trucks last week that were '07's with ACCERT C-15's. Buying a newer truck scares the crap outta' me. -
4hrs at -10 and I probably would have set the passenger seat on fire to take the chill off.
rookietrucker, Kimono_skunk and 07-379Pete Thank this. -
