Buy a 4 ft. step ladder. Probably can't take it with him while he's in training, but can when he gets his assigned truck.
He can probably store a 4 ft. ladder inside the sleeper compartment. This will keep it from getting filthy if stored outside the truck.

I'm 5 ft 2. Is he shorter than that? I don't remember having difficulty ever in 28 years of trucking from being short. I often used my 5th wheel pin puller to grab on the trailer door hinge and give me a hand hold to help so I could get in the trailer from the ground. He can also bring a fold-up step or 2 step ladder.

With one of the trailer doors closed, use the edge of that door as a hand hold and step up on the ICC bumper. Then throw your knee up onto the floor of the trailer. Then use your hand/arm to pull your body up/into the trailer.

Or with both trailer doors opened:
    1. step on the ICC bumper near trailer door hinge.
    2. Hook pin-puller over one of the door hinges.
    3. pull on the pin-puller as you put your knee on the trailer floor
    4. either grab next higher door hinge with pin-puller or roll into the trailer on your back.

I link to the items below just to show what items may help you, not that Amazon is the best price/place to buy them
    Pin-puller on amazon
    Folding step stool on amazon
    Folding step ladder
