Cabbage

Cause when you lose it and go over the side your in the cabbage patch.

 

If you pass another truck, get back in the slow lane asap. It seems like every time a semi would be going too fast, brakes smoking or on fire. You don't want to get in an accident there. It is a long way down over the side.

 

I love me some Cabbage......

 

My first time on Cabbage was in '77. It was also my first time EVER in the driver's seat, fresh after passing my written test and jumping in my brother's '74 Ford cabover.

We were eastbound, headed from Seattle to Denver. He stopped in Pendleton and had me drive around the parking lot a couple times, then it was off to the big road. The hill was under construction, with concrete barriers on both sides, NARROW lanes and I'm freaking out about hitting the barrier on the right versus not hitting trucks passing me on the left. Probably put a couple pounds of metal shavings in the Eaton.

I think I finally got the courage to shift to high range at the top of the pass IIRC. The next day my shifting greatly improved, because the palm of my hand was swollen and tender from trying to jam it in gear.

 

Oh that's a good one to be coming down bobtail in an ice storm with the jake brake on full blast.

 

So if your born in that area, does that make you a cabbage patch kid?

 

Some people take it more seriously than others. My driver was telling me that in the Christmas storm one driver had ALL the wheels chained up, including steers and trailer tandem. He wasn't going to be a victim......

 

The problem with that situation is the other guy that doesn't have a word in his native language for " chains ".

 

I disrespect cabbage all the time.

 

But i have also missed a gear at the top going westbound so, I'm desensitized.
