No need to be lost. Take the load & forget about it. You aren't pulling a 53' trailer, so you really don't need to be concerned about the California Bridge Law

48 ft is exempt from the kingpin rule but if you have a flip axle and put it down good luck!!

A 48' DD is legal in CA with or with out a permit load. Flip axles are not legal for any reason. (per CA oversize permit office) A 53' DD can be permited if you jump thru hoops and cross your toes. Permiting a 53' as explain to me: You haul the load too the CA border, call an inspecter who will bring out portable scales and weigh each axle, and check every thing else. If all is within specs your issued a CA certified # that will be used on all future permit orders. If your trl won't pass no entry is allowed. However that 53' is not legal when empty. Trucks must be certified also.

So the law is for 53ft trailers only? so you can run a 48ft step deck also and be legal

    Not on all roads.

As an example you could not take a 48' trailer with more than 40' king pin to rear axle to Ft bragg or Eureka as they are on Non-STAA roads.

So it depends on where the load picks up or delivers.

Also some roads in CA have a 65' limit from front bumper to back bumper. On these roads a 48' trl may not work.
