    Old Dominion is one of the better outfits that hire new cdl grads. They send recruiters to some cdl schools looking for drivers because the company is growing. Some of their jobs are home every day then if you get bored switch to some long runs. They have runs to California if you're real bored.

    Its how I got all my local jobs. Walk into a place and ask if they need a driver. There's always a slacker that needs replacing.

    Start early. They want a go getter, not another slacker. Be confident and keep your conversation POSITIVE. And keep your business YOUR BUSINESS. You're there to truck, not to unload your problems.

    I used to drive for NEMF, good company, good pay. Union so awesome benefits and the OT after 8hrs adds up fast. I thought about OD, they have nice trucks but still go by seniority but not Union so you have the downside, but not the upside. I don't (think) they pay OT until 55hrs. May change by region. I only left NEMF for earlier hours but it was still M-F day work.

    Seems almost all of what I read is positive about nemf. If I could get in straight out of school that would be pretty awesome

    Yes and no. Not every local company has local branches. My first CDL job was a smallish company (110 ish trucks). The first place I started working out of with them they had maybe 6-8 drivers in the city, but the rest of them were on a different account, they parked their trucks behind a locked gate at a customer yard and there would be no one to talk to unless I sat out there waiting for a driver to come out. That's if I knew where they parked their trucks. The second city I worked in with the same company (much closer to home) I was the only truck within nearly a hundred miles. Definitely no supervisors or managers to talk to.

    I also tried to get a job with another company that had a local place where their trucks were located, (this was an equipment dealership who had a few drivers who did their deliveries and pickups) and the guy who did the hiring mostly worked from home. Showed up maybe once a week. I managed to weasel a phone number out of someone but I never got a hold of him. Putting in an application online was the only way to do anything there.
