What are the steps on calling broker loads. I'm thinking about going fully independent, in a few weeks. Could someone explain , how to call on a load from the load boards. What are the steps.... Do, you have your own rate confirmation sheet, or do you use theirs.

Basically you call and negotiate a rate. As a general rule you can almost always get more than what they offer to start. If you haven't done business with them before your probably going to have to send them some paperwork(authority, ins, etc) and sign a contract or "broker agreement". Depends on who your dealikng with but most of the time (for me always) you will need to send their rate confirmation in with proof of delivery with your invoice to get paid. Just keep in mind, 1) they are in business to get you to haul the load as cheap as possible so they make more and 2) they really don't care if you get paid promptly so make sure you have your ducks in a row and send your invoice and paperwork as soon as practical.

Ask'em what the load pays. If it's acceptable to you than take the load, if not tell'em it ain't enough and either negotiate with'em or hang up on'em. Most brokers have some wiggle room, others simple flat rate it and take it or leave it. Up to you. It ain't rocket science. You can either take the load or turn it down. Remember this: Don't care what they say, "there's no such thing as a backhaul for an O/O! Period. That's just an excuse to lower the rate. Don't fall for it. They will send you a confirmation sheet. Make sure any fees are included, ie lumpers etc. There should be the amount the load pays. Flat rated loads are just that. Flat rated. If there's a fuel surcharge it should be listed separate with an amount. Watch for the terms of payment on the confirmation sheet. 14 days, 21 days etc. Keep in mind this is from the date they receive the paperwork. Good Luck!!
